Ready for the Biotech Big Leagues Just two years after opening its doors, biotech incubator Startup Sandbox is demonstrating that it’s ready to play in the big leagues.

After its launch in August 2017, the Sandbox has helped UC Santa Cruz talent to stay local — instead of taking their breakthrough ideas and technologies over the hill to Silicon Valley. Five of the twenty biotech companies that have spent time at the incubator have proven their product ideas and moved into their own offices. Almost all of those companies have chosen to stay in Santa Cruz to grow their businesses, hire employees and give back to the local community and economy.

Santa Cruz is distinctly not the Bay Area. It has its very own culture that we really love. Cameron Pye Founder, Unnatural Products Startup Sandbox member

Startup Sandbox is a research lab and incubator that works with UCSC to help biotech entrepreneurs to develop and prove their ideas, and to transform them into commercially-viable businesses.

The Sandbox provides a unique bridge where UCSC can turn its deep portfolio of intellectual property into real-world returns that benefit the University, its research staff, the entrepreneurs, and the Santa Cruz community. It's a winning formula that benefits everyone. Lou Pambianco Chair and CEO, Startup Sandbox
